How to wash your make up brushes

One question I'm always getting asked in the course of my work is how do I clean and keep my brushes in good condition. I've literally spent a small fortune on brushes over the past six years, each tiny little tool costing quite a bit so its vital that they last.
So I thought I'd share my secrets with you all.

Step 1 -What you'll need

Firstly, well a whole lot of dirty brushes like these.
Secondly a mild shampoo
Thirdly some dishwasher soap, I prefer fairy liquid but anything that's good at cutting grease will do

Step 2 - The how to of it all...

Note: Shampoo works better on natural fiber brushes, for synthetic brushes, especially those with emolient based products like lipstick, gloss, concealor, etc... on them sometimes you will need to add in a bit of wash up liquid to cut through the grease in the product.

Place the brush head down into a stream of hot water.
Dip into shampoo and create a lather by swirling the brush around in your hand. Treat your brushes like mini heads of hair, be gentle, if the brush is particularly dirty, repeat this until the water runs clean, don't smash the hairs of the brush trying to get product out.

Ensure that you keep the brushes pointed down at all times, this is so water won't enter the area called the ferrule (where the brush hairs are glued together) and weaken the bonds.

Step 3 - Drying

Ideally you should allow your brushes to dry over night in a well ventilated area. Don't place them on a heater as again this could weaken the glue.
Once your brush is clean, reshape the brush gently with your hands.
Lay it flat on a piece of tissue paper and leave it to dry.

Unlike regular shows, Cycle Chic 2011 will be staged outdoors as night falls and promises to be a theatrical display of models and performers lighting up the boardwalk, on beautiful bicycles, showcasing stylish and innovative fashion and cycle accessories.

The festival, run on a voluntary basis, offers an opportunity to be part of a part of a unique and fun event and we can also provide distinctive and original images for your portfolio.

Illamasqua the final act of self expression

Cult make up brand Illamasqua have teamed up with London funeral directors Leverton and Sons and are now offering a unique make up service for the dearly departed
Described as an:

“innovative service bringing ritual beauty to the final act for those who love to self-express”.

While completely morbid I can see the appeal in this for those whose identy is tied up in their self expression through make up. Its actually something I've always worried about myself (I know its a totally ridiculous issue) but being a make up artist I'm fussy about my make up, I won't even let counter staff demo products on me, so what if, god forbid, something happened and I was laid to rest forever with badly matched foundation / too much blusher. Likewise I can immagine that someone who was goth/punk/emo wouldn't want their look/personality erased in the end either.

That said I don't think its a line of work I will be getting into anytime soon.... and now i'm off to look for pictures of animals doing funny things cause this is all too serious

Absolutely loving Vogue Wilson's "do" for the launch of Impulse bodyspray’s newest scent ‘Very Pink’. (Making mental note to self to invest in some pink extensions)

I've long been a fan of these handbag staples and their latest offering was no disappointment.

Its a light fresh scent with citrus notes and delicate feminine florals and, dare I say it, a hint of luxury about it. I may sound a bit odd here, but to me, it's a more grown up and sophisticated scent than I'm used to with this product. Which is probably because it has an arsenal of perfume giants behind the development of it.

Bargain Beauty Buys

Lately I've been astounded at the quality that I'm finding in what was traditionally lower end / lower price (lower quality) make up.
Don't get me wrong, I love my lush brands and there's a hidden snob in me that just adores getting something nicely packaged from Mac or Dior for example
But on the other hand, I'm the daughter of an Irish mammy who likes nothing better than getting a bargain on well anything at all (whether its needed or not) and now I too love nothing more than finding a product that does the same or a better job than another similar product for a fraction of the price and I've been having quite a few of these moments lately.

Lets start with Essence

Mascara - I've long been a fan of the Diorshow waterproof mascara but when I came across something that looked very, very like (c'mon its an obvious dupe) it in Heatons i just had to get it to test it out and with a price range of €2.50 - 3.50 on their mascaras it wasn't going to be a huge gamble if it turned out to be horrible. It wasn't...While it doesn't come in the waterproof formula that I love the Dior one for it does give me massive false lash effect lashes, so much so that I just cannot justify forking out an extra twenty five squids for something only marginally better.

Gel eyeliner
Is a recent offering from Essence (also Catrice are doing one that's supposed to be equally as good but I haven't managed to find it stocked anywhere in Cork ). I had previously been using Mac's Fluidline in Blacktrack but had always found that the consistency left a lot to be desired and that it dried out far to quickly both on the eye and in the pot.
The essence gel liner is one of those products that just simply makes me happy, it does what its supposed to do, and it remains doing what its supposed to do until you tell it not to (or remove it but bear with the ronseal analogy). It stays wet in the pot, it goes on smooth and even, leaving no patchy bits or drag lines and it dries and stays incredibly black on the lid for the whole day.

Penny's - got a whole lot of things for... well all the time.

Where would we be without Penny's, the shopping savvy girls answer to almost all fashion needs..their latest offering fake lashes.
Now when Penny's first introduced their fake lash range I had a quick look and scoffed at the thick bands, the glitter, the feathers, the white balls and all other ridiculous objects that were stuck to the lashes to render them completely useless and I promptly forgot about them entirely.Then a few weeks ago during a bit of uncharacteristic sunshine I was in need of some emergency sandals and while in there I spotted their latest lash offerings.Firstly there was the 5 pack (girls aloud dupe) for €8, they looked perfect, flattering shapes, nice thin bands not a panto show amongst them. The shapes and the packaging are actually about a 90% copy of the girls aloud 5 pack but the good news is that these lashes seem to have gotten popular enough to drive down the price of the Eyelure Girls aloud 5 pack which is currently in Debenhams for €12.50. Good times

which brings me to the next savvy tip...
Eyelash Glue

Now Duo eyelash glue (surgical adhesive) is generally referred to as the be all and end all for decent eyelash glue and while it is fantastic and quite possible the best on the market it does come in at a quite steep €13(ish) mark. Eyelure on the other hand have their own offering of eyelash adhesive in Lashfix which generally retails from between €2.50 - €3 (I got this on promotion in boots a few months ago for €.75) Eyelure have always been and probably will always be my go to brand when it comes to all things lashes, there is a strong company history there and they know what they're at. Lash fix cannot be beaten IMO (not by duo for a +€10 price tag).

Skin care

Simple skincare have been a kit staple of mine since I started my career and has been a skincare favourite of mine since I realised I should be cleaning my face with something besides the soap in the bathroom.
At the moment Dunne's Stores as well as some pharmacy's have their range on a two for €5 promotion, I've stocked up anyway.

Rosewater - not strictly a bargain but I always think this beats the high end toners hands down and leaves your skin refreshed (and it smells lovely too)

Silcox base / Aqueous cream : perfect for dry irritated skin, big huge tubs of pharmacy grade available for around the fiver mark.

Had a very busy Easter this year ending in an entirely mad but oh so fun photo shoot with my good friend and awesome songstress/diva/nutjob (I kid) Sian Brown ( http://www.sianbrown.ie/), photographer Kait Hussman (http://www.kaithusmann.com/) and lots of help from Corinne Brown.

The shoot was on location at the old lunatic asylum (which is beyond creepy and very very cool) and ended up in Funderland (as you do :) ).

The look was gothic - to say the least and was achieved with Temptu SB on airbrushed on the face, matte grey shadows from Face 2, Vita Liberata, NYX, Mac, Smashbox and the both lip looks were done with OCC Lip Tars (which I must actually dedicate an entire post to because they are the most awesome make up product I've ever come across). Lashes from Penny's (more on this also later)

Anyway, the incredibly talented Kait has put together a teaser of the final pics from that day and has put them to "Remember My Name" a track from Sian's debut album "Blue Ruin". Hope you like the added helium fueled madness in my car at the end :)

Airbrush Make Up

Its official, I'm in love, and just in time for Valentines day and all. The bad news however is that its not with a Johnny Depp millionaire lookalike, its with a rather fabulous piece of equipment that I procurred at IMATS, I know i'm a make up nerd (I will write a review on the show as well as soon as I stop drooling over my new toy).

I managed to get my hands on the (constantly sold out) Temptu Air compressor with the SP35 airbrush, along with the S/B intro kit of foundations, blushes, highlighters, adjusters and the brow kit.

Since I got back with it (and managed to find a US plug adapter) I''ve been airbrushing anyone who I could find sitting still for long enough (my Dads afraid to fall asleep around me :) ) Everytime the results are so gorgeous that I cannot stop staring at my models.

Airbrushing is definately a new approach to make up, no longer can you see the make up on the face, in fact a lot of the time I'm checking my gun to make sure its working but then all of a sudden the face in front of me looks flawless. Its understandable why this is now the preffered method of make up artistry for HD film & tv and I know this is going to be a huge hit with Irish brides.

Ernst & Young Fashion Show

Accountants aren’t just boring suits ....
Or so Ernst & Young will demonstrate when employees of the Cork office throw away their calculators and take to the catwalk to raise funds for Cork Simon Community and The Saoirse Foundation. Monies raised will help support the homeless in Cork and also fund life saving treatment for little Saoirse Heffernan who has a rare neurological condition known as Battens Disease.John Higgins, managing partner of Ernst & Young’s Cork office, says "we are delighted to support this event, which we hope will raise funds for these very worthy charities. It’s important for us all to be aware of those who are ever more marginalized by the current climate, and we felt it was appropriate to get involved in this event in Cork, and support the local retail business while also helping charities in the region. We have a fantastic show lined up and will certainly dispel any myths that accountants are dull and boring!"
The event, which takes place on Friday, 12 November at 7pm in the Clarion Hotel, Cork, will showcase clothes from local retailers - Sheena’s Boutique, Lisboa, Amity, Charlotte & Jane, Scarlett, Saville and Mischief Makers. Guest models will include members of the Cork county hurling and football teams.

Well, it is preferably to the Oompa Lumpa song, but when it comes to your tan sometimes there is a fine line separating the two.

I’ve asked salon owner & all round beauty expert Edel Hegarty of the “Beauty Spot” (Glounthaune, Cork) to share with us some pearls of wisdom & expert tips to getting your tan right for your debs…

“Endorsed & used by celebrities worldwide a professional spray tan is now a necessity rather than a luxury for attending any social event.

As we become more aware of the damaging effect of sunbathing self tanning is coming back with a vengeance.

Receiving a sunless tan helps to boost our confidence, we require less makeup, it gives the illusion of a more slender physique, we appear & feel healthier, happier & even sexier!!

The market is awash with many different brands, each offering different results, don't panic!! Most tans now come in variety of shades, catering for all skin types. Ask your local salon what tan(s) they offer & if they have an option to suit you.

To prepare for you tan - don't use home tan for at least a week coming up to your big event. Exfoliate & moisturise your skin well on the days prior to you tan. However DO NOT moisturise on the day of the tan, as this can cause the tan to streak. Inform your therapist of any dry patches you may have as she will then moisturise these just before tan application.

The whole tanning process should take approx 1/2 hr - this gives enough time for the tan to dry into the skin.

Essentials.....loose dark clothes (don't worry any excess tan will wash off clothes) flip flops.

If you wish to get a full body tan & maximise on the effect you will need to leave your modesty at home.

You will be provided with disposal panties & a hat to protect your hair.

But please remember your therapist is a professional she will do her utmost to keep you modesty intact & will but you at ease.

If you are not comfortable with bearing most of your body, simply let the therapist know & she will let you know what she needs you to do.

For home tanning, the same basic principles apply - To prepare for you tan - don't use home tan for @ least a week coming up to your big event. Exfoliate & moisturise you skin well on the days prior to you tan. However DO NOT moisturise on the day of the tan, as this can cause the tan to streak.
Use a tanning mitt...they do what it says on the tin - smooth application of tan & they protect you hands from discolouration.

Apply vaseline to finger nails, toe nails & the souls of your feet, this also prevents discolouration.

Trick- do not apply tan with mitt from the wrist to finger tips or from ankle to toes. This is best done with a cotton pad with a smaller amount of tan mixed with a little moisturiser. Blend from wrist/ankle & apply lightly (especially on the hands & fingers) using sweeping motions rather than rubbing. Never apply to palms.

If you feel tan has gotten on palms use a baby wipe to remove & then apply a little moisturiser blending tan around wrist crease & side of hand.

Give yourself plenty of time to dry before applying loose clothing

Also only apply a small amount of tan to the face as you will be wearing makeup & don't want to look tangoed!!!

Local salons will normally do special packages for Debs, which includes a spray tan. These offer great value & getting a professional tan will help you look even more stunning on your big night”

Also some things to consider make up wise:- You will need to match your foundation to your new (tanned) colour, if you use tan regularly the best option is to buy a significantly darker shade of foundation & mix this with your regular colour until you have a colour match.
- Experiment with your colours, things that may suit you while your pale mightn’t look the same when your tanned.

Well folks there you have it, your definitive guide to the minefield that is fake tan.

Mac - Rodarte Collection a step too far?

Mac have recently gotten themselves in some hot water for the insensitive naming of their new products in their Rodarte collection. With countless number of blogs, Youtube videos & online petitions drawing attention to their, well, very bad taste, they weren't gonna get away with this one.

"World-renowned cosmetics brand MAC recently announced the September launch of a new collection in collaboration with high-profile fashion brand Rodarte, inspired by the colors and culture of Mexico. The new line features various products including a pink blush named "Quinceañera," and a sheer white lipstick called "Ghost Town." But it’s the frosty pink nail polish entitled "Juarez" that’s causing all the controversy.

“Naming a shade of nail polish ‘Juarez,’ after an impoverished Mexican factory town that is notorious for the rape and murder of countless girls and women is insensitive and tasteless,” Amelia Parry, the editor-in-chief of the premier women's relationship site TheFrisky.com told Pop Tarts. “Naming a secondary nail polish shade "Factory" further indicates the brand's cluelessness, as most of the women and girls who have been murdered in Juarez disappeared on their way to or from work at the town's factories. As Frisky blogger Jessica Wakeman said in a post on the subject, "I'm not going to go name my Sudan-inspired nail polish 'Darfur,’ which I think is a pretty apt comparison.”

MAC has since apologized for the product titles, and is now working to do all it can to win back offended consumers.

“We understand that product names in the MAC Rodarte collection have offended some of our consumers and fans. This was never our intent and we are very sorry,” a representative for the collection said to Pop Tarts in a statement. “MAC will give a portion of the proceeds from the MAC Rodarte collection to help those in need in Juarez. We are diligently investigating the best way to do this. Please be assured that we will keep you posted on the details regarding our efforts.”"

Mac's most recent statement on the issue:

"We understand that product names in the M·A·C Rodarte collection have offended our consumers and fans. This was never our intent and we are very sorry. We continue to listen carefully to the comments we have received and have the following plans to address concerns:

Vita Liberata Spray Tan @ The Beauty Spot

Being naturally sallow skinned, I don't do pale very well & the recent cloudy skys are not conducive to the healthy summer kissed look thats just sooo me.
With this in mind, last Friday I called into The Beauty Spot, Glounthaune for a spray tan.
This salon now offers the Vita Liberata tan which boasts such benefits as "odourless, organic and paraben free.

I must admit that I was a bit skeptical at first, they all claim that you won't smell like burnt biscuits and it inevitably happens anyway... but it didn't & there was no perfume masking smell present either.

The colour turned out very natural & whether its a testament to the application at the Beauty Spot or the product itself, there was no streaking. Four days later & its still looking good & fading evenly.
It gets two big tanned thumbs up from me anyway.

How Now Eyebrow??

Cognitive psychologists now believe that the role of the eyebrows in face recognition is more important than that of the eyes.
Your eyebrows add prominence to your facial features. They draw attention to your eyes and can sometimes define your perceived character. Think for a second of any cartoon villain, skulking in the shadows with the overly arched menacing brows or looking particularly brutish with a unibrow. Bert may not have always been an angry grump but that’s the way I’ll always remember him.

Even if you're not big on makeup, maintaining your brows is essential.

Getting the right eyebrow shape for you can often be a difficult task.
If you have a tendency to over pluck its time to put down the tweezers & seek professional help.
Growing out your eyebrows can be a difficult task so it’s easier to have a professional map out an eyebrow plan for you to stick to.

On the other hand a naturally thick bushy brow that's left in its natural state can make even the most feminine face look masculine.

Getting the right shape:To create a new brow shape, first determine where precisely your brow should begin, arch, and end.
•    The inner edge of the brow should vertically align with the center of the nostril.
•    The arch of the brow is naturally over the outer third of the eye, roughly even with the edge of the iris (coloured portion of the eye) when looking straight ahead.
•    The outer edge of the brow should align with the corner of the eye and should not extend into the temple.
•    The inner and outer edges should be horizontally even to avoid unintentional expressions.
•    Symmetry is critical between both brows to prevent a skewed, disproportionate appearance.

Important Eyebrow Tips•    For bushy eyebrows, first use small scissors to trim that unruly hair and then trim them.
•    Regularly tweeze your eyebrows to keep them in shape. The best time to tweeze eyebrows is just after bath when pores are open. Tweeze hair in the direction of growth and also pluck one hair at a time.
•    To avoid over plucking, shade in your desired eyebrow shape with an eyebrow pencil first & don’t pluck inside this area.

Haute Couture Awards 2010 - The final

Lucky me, I was again asked to do make up for the Haute Couture Hairshow in Silversprings on Sunday last. The flamboyance & abundance of creativity involved in these shows, easly make these my very favourite jobs.

The above entry (& winner of second place in the fantasy category) was by a Dublin salon called Hairworx.

Mineral Make Up

Unless you’ve been living beneath a large (mineral) rock for the past few years, you will have heard of the rise in popularity of mineral make up. Its virtues have been exalted from on high as the holy grail of cosmetics, the make up that is good for your skin, that gives you a flawless complexion (some have even ridiculously claimed that you can sleep in it), but is it all it seems or have the mineral make up cosmetic companies just latched onto a fantastic marketing campaign? A bit of both really…

The Pros of mineral make up are undeniably the most highly documented, countless articles, countless advertising campaigns, but just for the sake of balance here they are again.

•    Contains natural minerals such as Mica, zinc oxide & titanium dioxide.
•    Titanium dioxide & zinc oxide have anti-inflammatory properties, which are good for conditions such as rosacea or acne.
•    Non-comedongenic so won’t clog pores & aggravate acne.
•    Physical sun protection in the titanium dioxide with most averaging an Spf of 15
•    Gives a natural radiant coverage.
•    Frequently eliminates classic skin irritants such as fragrance, binders, synthetic dyes, and preservatives, so considered purer & kinder to skin

The Con(s)

•    The main ingredients (minerals such as Mica, zinc oxide & titanium dioxide) have actually been the basis for foundations for decades, there is nothing new in the use of these minerals in foundation.

•    There are no set regulations for what constitutes mineral make up and any product containing minerals as a primary ingredient can be marketed as such, even if it contains a multitude of non mineral (less skin kind) ingredients

•    One “natural” mineral which is frequently used to bulk up products (and is present in the majority of the most popular selling bands of mineral make up) is Bismuth Oxychloride. Come again? It is a pearlizing agent that gives make up a glow and while it is a mineral ingredient, it is not from earth. It is a by product of lead & copper processing,
•    It’s a skin irritant, & can cause itching, rashes & even cystic acne.

•    Messy, hard to use, prone to spills.

•    You need to buy a brush to use it

So the bottom line really is buyer beware, know what your buying into & look beyond the glossy add campaigns

Summertime Glow

So, are you glowing? Is your youthful skin radiant as the day is long? Or has the hot /cold Antarctic vs. Adriatic weather of recent played havoc with your skin.

Well if it’s the latter then no need to worry; here are some simple steps to fake it till you make it.

Taking care of your skin
It’s not a easy fix, or a miracle over-the-counter cure, but the good ol’ 8 glasses of water a day thing, does actually work wonders at clearing your skin & if you combine it with a balanced diet that includes plenty of fruit, vegetables and omega rich foods, well you’ll be glowing like a “glo worm” in no time.

Cleanse, tone & moisturize
Whatever your skin type, its important to cleanse you skin with a mild cleanser twice a day & I mean thoroughly cleanse, none of this running over it with a baby wipe business.
It’s also really important to exfoliate, twice a week with a gentle exfoliator, this will help remove dead skin cells & improve circulation, but, be kind to your skin, your cleaning delicate vital organ, not scrubbing the bathroom floor.

Massage a good moisturizer into your face & neck. Sunlight, while giving an instant boost to your complexion is an untrustworthy friend & will come back to haunt you as soon as you turn 25 so I recommend that you use a moisturizer with an added spf of at least 15.

Your base

Foundation
If your skin is blemish free, you may only want to use a tinted moisturizer to enhance your skin tone.

If not, you will need to find something with a little extra coverage. When choosing a foundation, you need to make sure that you are choosing the right colour & consistency for you. A good tip for colour matching is to test the foundation on your jaw line in natural light; it should blend into your skin. For a glowing finish choose an illuminating / light reflecting foundation. If you are unsure, get samples, take them home & wear them for a day or two to get a feel for how the product performs on your skin.

Concealor
Concealor can be applied on blemishes & areas of discoloration such as dark under eye circles or areas of skin pigmentation.
For dark under eye circles, its best to use a pink/salmon toner concealor followed by an illuminating concealor pen (such as the Yves Saint Laurent Touch Eclat)
If its nasty spots that are your problem, then you need a yellow based concealor to kill the red colour & cover the area. Tip, if you are dealing with an outbreak of spots, make sure that you thoroughly clean all your brushes, sponges, etc. after your finished with them as this will reduce the spread of the infection.

Powder
Nothing will give your make up more staying power than a little bit of setting powder & the object of the game here is looking dewy not greasy, so, apply a small amount of powder to your Mr T Zone, remember, less is more & it is easier to re-apply than to fix it if you accidentally turn yourself into a dessert goddess.

Bronzing & highlighting
Contrary to popular belief the correct bronzing method is NOT, a) get a huge brush, b) load said huge brush up with bronzer & c) swirl it round & round your face until you look 3 shades darker.
It IS however, a) get a large powder brush, the softer the better, b) dip into bronzer, tap off excess product on your hand or a tissue & c) lightly apply bronzer to the areas of the face where the sun would normally tan you i.e. forehead, bridge of nose, top of cheeks, chin and blend the product in so there are no discernable lines.
For a natural flush of colour, use a cream blusher. Orange & Coral shades are “In” this summer, experiment until you find a colour to suit you.
Using your ring & middle finger collect a small amount of product & place in three dots in the shape of an inverted triangle & blend together, using the heat from your finger tips to heat the product & pat it into the skin. The blush should start across from your nose & down from the middle of your eye.

A highlighting cream or powder can be put on the cheekbones to enhance them.

Eyes
Your eyebrows frame your face & play such an important role in your overall appearance, once you’ve found a flattering shape, keep them groomed regularly. Fill in any gaps with an eyebrow pencil.
This summer its all about the lashes so spending an extra couple of seconds on your mascara can make all the difference to your look. Prep your lashes by curling them first with an eyelash curler, then with a good, non clumpy, mascara coat your entire lash in the colour. Next re-do both eyes but concentrate on the tips of your eyelashes only, work in short swift strokes adding length & fanning out your outer lashes. If they do clump, comb them through with a lash brush.

So, that’s it, you’re ready to hit the streets & greet your adoring fans.

Bridal Make Up

Your wedding day will see you be the center of attention for the entire day. Everyone will be looking at you & your look will be forever immortalized in your wedding photos (no pressure there then :) )... basically, you want to look stunning.

Your make up plays an important role in complimenting your features, gown and accessories

Below are some tips to making the most of your bridal make up.

Make-up starts with great skin.

Before you start it is vital that your face has been properly cleansed, toned & moisturised & all traces of make up have been removed. Left over mascara / eyeliner will only seep down to your under eye area & ruin the finish of your foundation.

Avoid dry lips by putting a lip moisturizer on before bed and the morning of your wedding. Remember that colour fades unevenly on dry/chapped lips

Here’s a list of things you should keep in mind and avoid a few days before the wedding:

Don’t make any radical changes to the way you look in the days before your wedding. No facials, waxing, chemical peel, etc… (Any potential reactions should have the appropriate time to heal).

No changes to hair colour, hair style or bleached eyebrows

Have your eyebrows professionally shaped about two weeks before the wedding, Your eyebrows are such a major defining feature to your face, e.g. Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe...etc , you need to find the shape to suit you.

Tanning? Make sure your tan will be at the level you will have on your wedding day at least three days before the wedding. Why not schedule your tan trial to coincide with your make up trial.

Avoid substances that could give you oily skin, swelling and irritation. These include red meat, alcohol, and caffeine, spicy or deep fried foods

Remember to drink lots of water to keep hydrated and flush out the toxins

If you’ve decided to go it alone & are not using a make up artist, here are some useful tips to make up application

Apply primer: A good primer will minimise fine lines & pores & will increase the staying power of a foundation. Test out the primer prior to the wedding day to ensure that it is compatible with your choice of foundation.

I recommend Smashbox Photofinish primer, or Laura Mercier Hydrating Primer

Foundation: Ensure your foundation matches your skin tone. Never use a foundation to alter the colour of your skin. If you wish your skin to look warmer, use bronzer.

Foundation should be applied lightly & evenly & should only be used where needed to even out your skin tone & give you a nice fresh look.

Do not use foundation to conceal blemishes; it will end up looking caked on.

Also keep in mind that your make up needs to be done in a way that is suitable for photography. Sometimes make up, photographs very differently to how you look in person.

A few things to keep in mind when choosing a foundation for your big day are:

Mineral make up, because of its high concentration of Mica & Titanium Dioxide is not suitable for use in photography.

Avoid foundations with an active Spf ingredient

Avoid foundations that change colour once applied.

Use a good concealer on any blemishes you may have including any skin discolouration in the under eye area. Blend the concealer well.

If you suffer from dark circles or shadows apply an illuminating product such as YSL Touch Éclat to areas of dark shadows on the face i.e. under the eyes.

Apply power with either a cotton powder puff, (dip the puff into the powder, shake off excess on your hand (less is more) & press & roll onto the face. ) or with a large soft powder brush. Brush off any excess.

Apply bronzing powder (lightly) to areas on your face where the sun would naturally tan e.g. forehead, cheekbones, bridge of nose.

Apply blush to the apples of your cheeks, (big smile & brush onto the fleshiest part).

If you wish to experiment with contouring your face, choose a light & a dark blush shade. Place the darker shade below your cheek bone & the lighter on above.

When it comes to eye make up there are two trains of thought on this.

1) You can beware of fashion trends that may easily date, (think of bad 80’s wedding albums) Choose something classic & understated. Think about your overall look, if you wish to go for a strong lip colour then go for a very natural eye make up & vice versa.

2) On the other hand, if your confident in your style why not define your place in time (think of fabulous 50’s & 60’s looks), you may want to look back at your album in 40 years time & tell the grandkids that’s how it was way back then

Either way, you look should represent who you are.

Lips: Keep your lipstick in tune with the overall look (see above reference). Use a lip liner to define your lips, fill in the entire lip with liner so as to avoid the dreaded lip line if the lipstick fades. Apply lipstick, blot & re-apply. Beware of using gloss if it’s a windy day as it may ruin your veil.

Practice this look a couple of times before the wedding, ask friends to take photos of you wearing it. If you are still unsure ask your photographer, they may recommend that you use a make up artist.

Make sure you have a lipstick, powder and blotting sheets with you to touch up when needed

If you are using a make up artist:

Schedule a trial

This is the time to try out various look you may have in mind & see what suits you.

Spend some time before your trial looking at magazines to see if you see anything you like. Look at old photos of yourself that you like, what is it about that look that you like? Even if you don’t find the exact look your going for, these things, as well as a chat about how you see yourself on your wedding day will give your make up artist a good idea of what your going to like.

Also, use this time to talk to your make up artist about the schedule for the day, e.g. hair appointment times, directions etc...

On the day

Sit back, relax, don't forget to eat… you will have teased out the look & shades you are happy with during the trail. Now is your time to be pampered.

Product hygiene is a total bugbear with me & while I lurve make up shopping I always cringe & back away when counter staff offer to demonstrate a product on me. Truth is, so many people have stuck their finger in the products & because of the traffic of people going through these places its impossible to ensure that the tools they're using have been properly cleaned.

2010 Academy Awards - My Hits, Misses & Middlings

Well the Oscars last night has definately give fuel to my inner "sit on the couch & judge people" demon.

Heres my list of who I loved, who I didn't & who i'm on the fence about.

Loved:

Sandra Bullock - Best actress & best dressed in one night! So perfect I cannot find a single flaw (my judgy demon is raging). Her Marchesa Gown is simply stunning. Her hair, straight with a soft curl at the end, her make up was beautiful with a sofly defined eye, lots of attention to the lashes & a pop of coral pink of the lips.

Loved:

Demi Moore - In this nude Atelier Versace gown, is perfection. I just love this dress, its soo pretty & feminine. Hair & jewlery are fab but make up is very much lacking, I won't post the close ups but her skin looks tired & the eye make up aint so great, she could definately have done with a bit of colour brighten her complexion against this nude dress.

Loved:

Miley Cyrus - Her Jenny Packham gown was stunning on her, so appropiate
for her age, playful yet elegant. Maybe a little small on top but I think she pulls it off. Her hair was gorgeous, puled back softly & her make up was stunnng. Big false lashes gave her eyes great definition, perfect skin & a nude pinky lip. Top all that with the appropriate bling & she was definately a winner in the style category.

Loved

Nicole Richie - For taking a risk with something different, it really paid off.
Nicole seems to be channeling 60's icons here & it definately has a hint of Edie Sedgewick.
The dress is a floor length Reem Arca in a shimmering gun metal colour.
The hair is pulled into a tight high bun. The make up is probably the boldest thing on the red carpet last night, in shade s of black & striking white with heavy winged liner with a nude lip. This definately gets my favourite make up of the night, kudos Ms Richies make up artist

I didn't Love

Charlize Theron - Normally perfect, she took a risk last night
in a "my boobs are here dress", it didn't pay off.
She looks beautiful as always & her hair & make up are subltle & polished but unfortunately the swirling flower boobs ensure that nobodys looking at her head.

Also not loving:

Vera Farmiga - here is a classic example of clashing tastes,
this Marchesa dress is being her alded as best dressed by some, to me, well it kinda looks like
a large piece of frilly red seaweed. Im just not loving it.

I'm on the fence about:

Kristen Stewart - Looking a little less goth than usual in this stunning Monique Lhullier. However I feel kinda, like she's still trying on the dress, like, yes it gorgeous, imaging what it'll be like when you've your hair make up & jewelery on. Her look just seems very unfinished to me, which is a pity because she could have been amazing in this.

The coverage it gives is fantastic but it never looks heavy & it suits most skin tones, I use it on young & mature skin & its never let me down.

Over the years I've met many, many women, who have little or no confidence in their make up application. These same women have spent (literally) thousands of Euro on buying products that they don't know how to use or that should never have been sold to them in the first place.

The best time to start experimenting with make up is in your teenage years (when you can get away with the really outrageous stuff) but often girls are reliant on advice they get from TV (which is often geared towards older women anyway) or friends.

By learning the basic rules of make up at a young age you can perfect them & then with a little immagination start breaking those rules & come up with your own individual style

Everyone should bring their make up bag to get all the best tips for expertly applying the products they already have & to receive advise on any other products needed.

Everyone will receive notes on everything they have learned at the party.
